I had 1.4cm invasive ductal and I chose to have a bi lateral mastectomy, which was done in November. After consider all other options I decided it was the best choice to give me the most peace of mind. I am going through expander reconstruction at the moment. It is a very individual thing so get as much info as you can before you make I decision. I can only tell you that I have not regretted my decision for one second. Good luck on your journey.

I had stage 3c IDC. Positive receptors as well, HER 2 neg. my lump was approx 7 cm. I had chemo, a bilateral mastectomy (in Oct. 2011) then more chemo afterwards due to extensive extranodal spread. I just finished chemo a little over 3 weeks ago. And I'm happy to say I had a clean PET scan!!! I wasn't able to have reconstruction at the same time as my mastectomy due to the cancer being in a late stage & in my chest wall. So...I will do that later on. My next step is radiation therapy. It was hard losing my breasts but I don't regret my decision at all. That combined with chemo, my awesome oncology team, faith, family, & friends pulled me through & saved my life!!!!!!! No regrets. :). Like Kim said...it is a very personal choice. Prayers to you on your journey to wellness.

I also had IDC. These choices are so personal, we can give you the reasons why we chose the way we did. I chose to have a mastectomy because of the location of my tumor. It was toward the mid-line of my chest and esthetically, it would have looked like a shark took a chunk out of my boob! My surgeon said if I had a mastectomy, I would not have to have radiation either. Since we have to take a ferry boat off an island which is time consuming and expensive to do this for 6 weeks, it was a no brainer for me to have chosen the mastectomy, instead of the "shark-bite." I have been happy with the decision and have a prosthesis that looks natural in my clothes, and feels like a part of me. I am also 63 so my decision not to have reconstruction was based on my age and wanting to get done with the treatment asap. BTW... when I had the mastectomy, I never had to take any kind of pain medication. I know that isn't always the case but other than being a bit sleepy from the anesthesia, I felt perfectly ok.

I too chose double mastectomy over lumpectomy and radiation. For a very early stage of DCIS For me I had a strong family history of breast cancer and wanted to do everything possible to prevent it's return. Although it did return I had been followed closely so my reoccurrence was caught early with negative lymph nodes and micro invasive cells. I agree with Kim and Diana You have to do what is best for you and base your decision on that, after you have heard all your choices and research your specific type of breast cancer. . I am very happy with the choices I made with my breast cancer treatment. And realize no matter what course you choose you need to continue to be monitored. A life long journey, as a survivor. Each year there are new ways to monitor, new procedures and new treatments. We are fortunate as breast cancer survivors our sisters keep on pushing for more research and awareness.

Thanks so much. The doctors say that the longevity is the same for both surgeries. They are pushing for lumpectomy. Gut is saying mastectomy, lots of pain since core biopsy two weeks ago. I'm having an MRI next week hopefully that will give a little better answers. I just dont want to worry. Im 54 raising four grandkids and am looking for piece of mind! Thanks for being here.
