I did the bi lat because I figured it would be easier to recover once amd it would be easier to match two new ones. It was a personal choice I chose a DIEP flap and I'm very happy with my choice.

Diane, I assure you - brewski did not cause your cancer to reoccur. :) I'm commenting on this not because I've already done this but because if I did have a reoccurrence I would have the whole kit and kaboodle removed. That's just me. As it is, I'm seeking a hysterectomy right now because I'm afraid of other female cancers now. I wish you the best of luck. Follow your instincts, whatever they may be and listen to your body. There is no wrong answer here as it is so very personal. Luck and love.

Ultimately you have to do what's best for you. After all the data that Dr. gives you and after much prayer God can lead you the way. God bless you.

Diane, I started with a lumpectomy. Didn't get clean margins & cancer was more aggressive than thought. I then had a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction using expanders switched out for saline implants. I am totally at peace with my decision. It is the right thing for me. Prayers to you.

Thanks Andre, I had stage 0 DCIS in 2009. Lumpectomy and radiation since the cells were high grade. Now I have DCIS stage 0 once again, this time low grade. I was on Tamoxifen. I take paxil for anxiety and knew about the interaction, but other meds did not work as well. I also enjoy drinking beer with my husband.(Not to excess) but prolly more than the medical world would like. Sometimes I feel it is my fault that this reoccured, but sometimes you have to do what makes you happy. Have to have bone scan, CT scan, X ray. Although the doc thinks it is overkill, he said he does not want to miss anything on his watch.

Diane, I had invasive breast cancer on my left breast, with no cancer indicated on my right. My mom had the same cancer, chose a single, 7 years later got breast and colon cancer at the same time. I spoke to many other women who had done a single, then had reaccurance in their right. I chose double and am so glad I did. I am 4 months out from surgery, and have the peace of mind that I don't have to worry about that right breast. Reconstruction healing is worse than the healing from surgery, although mastectomy was more difficult than anticipated. I hope this helps, God Bless and get a moving on being bigger than cancer. We can survive.

    Learning About Breast Cancer
I had DCIS stage 1 on the left side back in 1993, had lumpectomy and radiation. In February 2011, I was diagnosed with DCIS on the left side again but had to have a mastectomy. I chose to do a bilateral with no reconstruction. That decision ended up saving my life literally as there was invasive cancer in the right breast that hadn't shown up on the original mammogram. Oncologist said no further testing would be needed. But because my surgeon didn't know the cancer was on the right side he didn't remove any lymph nodes. That has always bothered me so this year at one of my checkups with the surgeon I inquired about him checking the lymph nodes. Another decision that saved my life. He said he would if they appeared to be a problem. I was sent for an ultrasound and sure enough one of them didn't look right. Had a biopsy, it was malignant. Just had surgery on lymph nodes and two of them were malignant. Do what you feel you need to do for yourself. I don't regret the no reconstruction - at my age they aren't a big deal anymore - hahaha! Be proactive for yourself and be comfortable with yourself and your body.

I know of a woman with a horrible type of cancer with a 5cm tumor, had a mastectomy and every sort of treatment followed by recon. And a lift on the other breast 5 years later. She is about to enter her 10 year mile. You must do for you. There is no way to know if you will have a recurrence regardless of your path. Peace of mind may be your deciding factor. Hugs and good luck. Jo :-)
